Some deeply religious people are under the bondage of tradition, man-made rules, and outward appearances. Demons thrive in this kind of environment, especially demons of control. It is a lot easier to keep a ritual or list of rules than it is to walk by faith. Wherever there is any substitute for faith in the finished work of Christ, it is a doctrine of demons.

In the body of Christ today, there are many self-appointed "watchmen" who exercise what they describe as a "Last Days discernment ministry." They see their role as discerning spirits and doctrinal errors - sounding the alarm when they identify what they believe to be hidden dangers. I prefer to call many of these individuals "watchdogs" rather than watchmen because, like a dog on guard that lacks discernment to distinguish friend from foe, they are often unnecessarily alarmist, "barking" at anything that moves and reacting loudly to anything unfamiliar to them, seeing inherent treats in phenomena they do not know or understand.
